MIAMI – A police-involved shooting occurred Thursday morning in the city of Miami, authorities confirmed.
Miami police said the shooting happened in the area of Southwest 38th Avenue between 29th Street and 27th Terrace.
Sky 10 was above the scene shortly after 9 a.m. as police blocked off a portion of the neighborhood.
“I heard at least five or six gunshots,” Kenneth Gomez, who lives in the area, said.
Gomez said he heard the gunshots as he sleeping inside his home and he said the commotion came from a few doors down.
“It was a couple houses down on the left side. There was cops everywhere,” he said.
Authorities said they received a call regarding someone crashing a truck into a tree in front of a home in the area, and then received multiple phone calls about shots being fired.
“Subsequently, one of our officers makes contact with a subject, that officer does engage that subject and fired his weapon. The subject was struck. That subject has been transported to the hospital,” Miami Police Chief Jorge Colina said.
Several men, who appeared to be distraught, showed up at the scene after the incident.
Colina said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the police-involved shooting, per standard protocol.
