AMC, Space Center Houston among latest businesses to delay openings

AMC Theatres, Space Center Houston, and the Sugar Land Skeeters are the latest businesses reversing their decisions to reopen.

AMC announced on its website that it’s scaling back the original reopening date until the end of July.

HARRIS COUNTY MASK ORDER EXTENDED: Houston coronavirus updates: What you need to know for June 30

“AMC will resume theatre operations at approximately 450 U.S. locations on Thursday, July 30, and at approximately 150 remaining locations the following week in time for a theatrical slate commencing in August that appeals to audiences of every segment,” said a press release.

“We continue to devote extraordinary resources into our plan to operate our theatres with a hyper commitment to the safety and health of our guests and associates, notably in the United States through our new AMC Safe & Clean initiative,” said Adam Aron, CEO & President, AMC Theatres.

Space Center Houston shared in a tweet they would delay their reopening until further notice.

In accordance with health guidelines from Harris County, the city of Houston, & the latest stay-at-home ordinance, we will extend our closure until further notice. “Space Center Houston will continue to monitor the latest updates from state, local, and CDC officials and will continue to adjust its plans and protocols accordingly to ensure it can offer the safest experience possible for everyone.”

The Sugar Land Skeeters also announced on Monday that they would postpone Opening Day for the Constellation Energy League until July 10.

“Due to the rapid rise in COVID-19 cases over the last two weeks, and based on advice from our medical advisors, we believe it is prudent to delay the start of the season one week,” said Skeeters owner Kevin Zlotnik. “This is not a decision our organization entered into lightly.

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise in the area, several employers are delaying or extending their closure in response to the latest COVID-19 level being at critical status.
