Leeds people react to mysterious ‘Beast of Leeds’ footprints as city’s big cat rumour resurfaces

Leeds Live readers have speculated on what they believe the footprints are from an unknown animal found in a remote area of the woods.

The set of mysterious, strange and unusually large footprints has sparked suggestions they could have been made by the ‘Beast of Leeds’.

Two members from Yorkshire Outdoor Hunters discovered the giant prints while they were out geocaching.

The hunters claim the secluded woodland, close to the River Aire in the south-east of the city, would be impossible for dog walkers and the wider public to access.

They also report that there were no human footprints – only those of the unidentified wild animal or creature.

So what left the prints? When members asked for help on social media to identify it, they were met with ambitious suggestions including elephants, dinosaurs(!) and the mysterious ‘Beast of Leeds’.

After posting our initial article on the footprints earlier today, readers have commented on what they believe the prints to have come from.

Rachel Davies said: “Looks like a rottweiler print to me.”

Linda Otley said: “It’s clearly a large dog paw print.”

Charlie Jefferson said: “It’s obviously a dog!”

Whilst other speculated on what else it could have been, sighting a mysterious animal which has believed to have been spotted in the Leeds area in a few occasions in the last few years.

Joe Tyson said: “The Beast from Ossett returns! There has been loads of rumours about a big cat in the Leeds area for years.”

Whilst another said: “It’s that damn big cat again!”

And Robert George said: “The real beast from the east has arrived!”

The aforementioned hunters are often out exploring and have seen many wild footprints before but have never spotted anything quite like this.

One member, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “We were out looking for a geocache spot close by which we located and has been documented by our Yorkshire Outdoor Hunters Group.

“Curiosity led us to the area where we spotted the tracks as we wondered where it led to.

“The exact location is difficult to access and we were not strictly allowed there.

“My first thoughts when I saw them was this is something big, I have seen deer and badgers in the same spot but deer tracks are easy to spot.

“I had never seen anything like these before hence why we asked if anyone could help identify.

“I never thought to take a measurement or comparison but as you can see from the pictures, they are quite large.”
