Tiger King star Joe Exotic’s legal team have announced they have a ‘high level meeting’ in place in Washington as they push for a Presidential pardon from Donald Trump.

The former zoo operator, real name Joe Maldonado-Passage, is currently serving 22 years for offences including a murder-for-hire plot of rival big cat enthusiast Carole Baskin.

As TMZ reports, Exotic’s legal team is due to travel to Washington DC on January 6 for the meeting, and the timing could be critical.

It comes the day before the House of Representatives will vote to ratify Joe Biden as the next President of the United States.

As the report suggests, Trump may look to pardon a number of people on January 6 as a way of distracting from the vote.

The legal team recently said they were confident their efforts were about to pay off.

‘We are waiting on the pen to hit the paper, we think we are very, very close,’ Eric Love, an attorney for Exotic previously told ABC News.

A source from inside the government also told the site: ‘We’ve heard from the Tiger King. You wouldn’t believe the amount of calls, some insane, we’ve gotten.’

Exotic was imprisoned in 2019, but since the Netflix documentary series became a worldwide hit, Exotic has been lobbying President Trump in an attempt to get himself released via a presidential pardon.

The US leader stated earlier this year that he would ‘look into it’ during a conference.

Despite their efforts, Baskin previously contested their appeal and asked Trump not to release Exotic, who is currently due for release in 2037.

Baskin previously told Channel Seven’s The Morning Show in Australia: ‘I can’t believe that would be a good move for anybody’s political career – given the fact that he was convicted for two counts of murder for hire and 17 counts of wildlife trafficking and abuse, which included shooting five healthy tigers in the head to make room for some circus cats he wanted.’

Tiger King is available now on Netflix.
