TikTok, ShareIt, Mobile Legends, other popular Chinese apps blocked by Indian govt

Malicious App Hosting Stores

TikTok, the highly popular platform for short-form mobile videos, has been banned in India alongside several other Chinese apps. The Ministry of Information Technology (MeitY) announced on Monday that it has decided to block 59 Chinese mobile apps, “which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order,” the order said.

The decision comes after the MeitY had received several reports about the misuse of some mobile apps on Android and iOS platforms. The malicious apps had been stealing and transmitting personal information of users to servers located outside India.

“The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures,” MeitY said in a statement.

The apps banned by the ministry include TikTok, the popular app used by millions in the country. The Chinese social media app had also donated Rs 30 crore towards PM Cares Fund to fight against coronavirus pandemic.

India-China relations

Where does the two countries stand in diplomatic relations?Reuters

India’s decision to ban tens of Chinese apps across the country comes during mounting tensions between the two countries, which have been engaged in a fierce standoff in Eastern Ladakh for months now. Despite citing the security aspect, banning prominent Chinese apps in India sends a strong message to Beijing.

India is the first to impose a nationwide ban on Chinese apps. Even the US had only restricted its military personnel from using apps like TikTok citing data harvesting concerns. Will this precedent lead other countries to take similar steps against China, which has been eyed in bad light ever since the coronavirus outbreak is a matter that remains to be seen yet.
