A 112 year-old woman wisecracked she got her Covid vaccine while her 84 year-old son looked on. Hazel Plummer pretended to forget her age as she received the injection on Wednesday at the Life Care Center nursing home in Littleton, Massachusetts, where she lives.

Chatting with David about her age, Hazel, who is Massachusetts’ oldest living person, said: ‘109?’ He answered: ‘No, 112.’ Hazel replied ‘Oh my God,’ in mock surprise, prompting peals of laughter from care home staff and the nurse who’d come to vaccinate her.

She hopes to show that the vaccine is safe, even for people who are very old and frail. Hazel, who still refers to herself as a ‘gal’ encouraged others to get the shot as soon as they can, saying: ‘Just do it.’

She was one of 49 patients and 50 staffers who received the first shot of their vaccine, and who will get their next injection next month.

David said of his mother: ‘She turned 100 and said “I don’t know why I loved this long.” I said, “Ma, I never knew anybody a hundred years old.”

‘She said: “Neither did I.” It’s really something.’

Life Care Center lost 14 residents, and one nurse to Covid, with worker Samantha Pereira excited by the prospect of the new shot finally ending the pandemic.

Pereira told WCVB: ‘This does give us hope, it’s like a new chapter. We’re so blessed to have this vaccine and I’m just excited for the future.

Hazel, who is old enough to remember the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, is three years younger than America’s oldest living person, 115 year-old Hester Ford from North Carolina.

The US has now infected close to 19.8million people, and killed over 343,000.
